Required training 2008

posted under category: General on July 29, 2008 at 1:00 am by MrNate

At work, we are required to take 5 days of training this year. This is a challenge for me on a few levels. First, I have a new baby at home, so I don't want to leave the Phoenix area. Second, I'm having trouble finding classes that are open and applicable to me.

I have a SQL Server background, and I'm using Oracle, so I tried to get into a good Oracle class, but it was cancelled, so now, I'm weighing Java and .NET among others.

Unfortunately, at this point, it's quickly turning into an annoyance that i just have to 'fix' instead of the terrific learning opportunity that I'm sure it was meant to be.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears.

Take a Sliverlight or a LINQ course. I haven't done any Sliverlight yet, but I have done WPF and I can say its a whole different ball of wax when it comes to development. The WinForms paradigms don't apply to the WPF/Sliverlight world.

As far as LINQ goes, I've done a little bit of linq here and there, and I love it. Pretty powerful stuff!

CFUnited + CFObjective might just do it :)

What about on-line training? Could you sign up for a class via (for example) TotalTraining.com and satisfy the requirement?

Dan - WPF is looking pretty good these days, thanks for the suggestion. (ps - subscribed, sorry i didn't before!)

Ron - conferences = out of state = angry wife ;) I will try to hit them next year maybe.

Nolan - Not sure if I can pitch it to my manager to do 5 full days of online training, but it's a good idea. I'll ask about it, thanks!
